Dortmund reserve keeper Roman Burki was next to Bartra when the bombs exploded and described the scene.

Burki said: “We left the hotel at 7.15pm, drove down streets, and the bus turned into the main road when there was a huge boom – a real explosion.”

“I was sitting in the back row next to Marc Bartra, who was hit by fragments of a broken rear disc. After the bang, we all ducked in the bus and laid on the floor. The police were fast on the spot.

“We are all shocked. Nobody thought of a football match in the minutes after.”

UEFA confirmed that security has been stepped up for all games and events in Europe following the recent terror attack in Stockholm.

They are carrying out an investigation to discover the circumstances surrounding the Dortmund bus as it travelled to their game.

The attack, which left fans shocked (above), happened six miles from the stadium after explosives were placed in a hedge by the roadside.

Dortmund chief executive Hans Joachim Watzke said: “The whole team is in shock. You will not get those pictures out of your head.

“I just hope the team is able to compete on the field tomorrow.” Benedikt Howedes, who plays for Dortmund’s rivals Schalke, tweeted: “Separated in colours, united against violence! All the best Marc Bartra and the entire team. I hope you’re fine!”

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, whose side play Leicester tonight, said: “I’m speechless and concerned. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind.”

A German police tweet confirmed that there had been “three explosions in the area of the team bus”.

And police officer Gunnar Wortmann said: “Several windows were broken.”
