The Gunners boss is planning new player contracts, signings and even drawing up pre-season arrangements and those around him believe he wants a new deal – despite the current fan backlash.

Arsenal’s position has not changed in that an announcement will come at the end of the season and the decision will be mutual.

But if the club hierarchy change their stance, they will have to tell their most successful manager the time is right for a new direction.

Wenger is mulling new contracts for players, with talks already underway for a big overhaul of the squad.

The club’s owners – including majority shareholder Stan Kroenke – are acutely aware of the fan unrest and it is hard to imagine Wenger carrying on in such circumstances for another two years.

But the Frenchman still has the FA Cup and top four to aim for and believes he can turn things around.

One player under discussion is Jack Wilshere, but the midfielder, currently on loan at Bournemouth, fears he is not part of Arsenal’s long-term plans.
