Who cares for the North? Not Tories

-

So the great North-South divide gets bigger under this Government, blighting care for the elderly, especially in the North West (Mirror, April 11). The Tories stand accused of neglecting elderly people outside their heartlands by imposing bigger cuts to social services in those areas.

I note the top 20 worst areas for care homes are in the North of England, while the best are in the affluent South.

I also read that the NHS may borrow £10billion from City hedge funds to maintain services and boost GP surgeries.

This Government really is the pits. The North-South divide continues to grow, yet no action is taken. I just hope I never require social care.

Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

# Once again the headlines scream out about the shocking state of care homes for the elderly – this time highlighting the difference in quality between the North and South. It is said that the measure of a civilised country is how it treats its elderly and vulnerable, and Britain under the Tories is failing miserably. Those who are apathetic about politics may come to rue the day when they find themselves old, alone and in need of care.

J Nicholson, Barnsley South Yorks

# It’s typical of Theresa May to proclaim that she is running the country for everyone, not just the privileged few, yet we read that the elderly needing social care in the North are getting poorer treatment than those in the South.

How she has the gall to stand up and continue to tell lies is beyond me. Let’s get the Tories voted out at the next election – for good.

Michael Maher Ashton-under-Lyne, Gtr Manchester

# The North-South divide in elderly care is shameful. The likes of Tom Watson, Liz Kendall and Peter Kyle, who are all vigorously anti-Corbyn, should unite behind their twice-elected leader and challenge the cuts, instead of continually undermining him.

Steven McNamara, Middlesbrough

# Is anyone really surprised that there is a huge North-South divide when it comes to care homes for the old and infirm?

It is a fact of life that the Tories have only ever cared about the interests of those in their heartlands. They couldn’t give a damn about the North because they know the majority of people who live there don’t vote for them.

When will the people of this country wake up and smell the coffee – and say enough is enough?

Phil Sweeney Stockport, Gtr Manchester

# There has always been a North-South divide. More money is spent in the South East than the rest of the country put together. That will never change with the Tories.

M Grove Birmingham

# Why are we allowing this huge disparity between the North and South?

Where is our Labour Party and has it got a strategy or plan of opposition to the endless Tory cuts?
