How worst of Wenger spoilt best of British

-

NEVER mind the anger, the outrage, the sadness even.

Here are six reasons why Arsene Wenger’s time is up.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere.

In December 2012, Wenger, posing like a master with five of that flock as they signed new contracts (below), promised this collection of British youngsters would be the core of his future Arsenal.

They have trodden water, stagnant in a pond of coaching mediocrity.

Is any one of those players – and you can throw the more-recently arrived Calum Chambers into that pot – a more accomplished footballer nearly half a decade on?

Injuries might have played their part, but the answer is no.

The buzzwords after the capitulation at Selhurst Park were “cowardice”, “spineless”, “gutless”, “frail” and so on, but Arsenal’s weakness is much more than mental, much more than psychological.

Increasingly, they simply look like a team that does not know what it is supposed to be doing.

Wenger’s ideals are great, but his coaching appears to have failed a generation of Arsenal players.

That is why his time should be up. SOMEONE who once worked with Ronald Koeman described him to me as either a) in a bad mood or b) in a bad-mood-waiting-to-happen.

One thing is for sure, though. Taking the time to visit Seamus Coleman and his family in Ireland put a smile on the face of his full-back.

Nice touch, Ronald.
