Tories pick OAPs as latest victims

-

With the General Election only weeks away, I find it hard to believe there are so many people who want more of the same – higher taxes by way of a rise in VAT, a rise in National Insurance and the triple lock on pensions abolished.

A government of millionaires will never understand what hardship means. Theresa May claims she wants a fair Britain for everyone but you cannot believe a word she says.

Jeremy Corbyn may not come over as forcefully as many politicians, but he is the leader of the Labour party so let’s get behind him.

If every nurse, doctor, teacher, pensioner and ordinary person of this country votes Labour we can turn the tide of misery heading our way. Victor Laidlaw, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex So the truth is out – having already attacked the sick, disabled and unemployed, the Tories’ next target is our OAPs and the end of the triple lock on pensions which will mean a cut in real terms. Other allowances, such as the bus pass, the winter fuel allowance and probably pension credits are under threat as well. Only Labour is promising to look after our pensioners properly. Where pensions are concerned, you can’t trust the Tories. John Bainbridge, Penrith Who on earth do these lazy, feckless, bullying Tories think they are, apparently toying with the idea of not maintaining the triple lock guarantee? None of them are qualified to do the jobs they do (Hunt has no healthcare qualifications; Hammond is not an economist etc). They get big pensions and claim huge expenses. Do not vote for these hypocrites. T Maunder, Leeds Mick Streets (Mirror, April 19) perfectly summed up the reasons for not voting for the Tories. Add to that the Tories’ refusal to discount NI, VAT and tax increases, while cutting back on pensions, and it seems incredible they seem to be increasing their lead in the polls. People must surely realise that to vote for the Tories now would give them a clear mandate to continue with all these cuts for the next term.

I hope if the nation votes for the Tories we don’t see loads of letters of complaint when Theresa May continues with these cuts and tax rises. It is a great pity that Labour cannot unite under a strong leader to help give the Tories a good battle. Phil Crossley, Morden Philip Hammond reasonably says he does not want his hands tied in the next Parliament by promises not to raise income tax, NI contributions or VAT. There are constant complaints about the NHS being underfunded. Parents complain about being asked by schools for contributions to meet a shortfall in their budgets. The electorate are not children. They know if they want decent schools and hospitals etc they have to be paid for. I do not think the Government should be afraid to say they will raise taxes when necessary.
