FERNA SO HAPPY AT GIFTS OFF GAB AGAIN

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

GABRIEL JESUS is ready to recapture his best form and fire Manchester City into the Champions League, according to team-mate Fernandinho.

The Brazilian wonderkid made his comeback from a 10-week injury lay-off as a second-half sub in Thursday’s goalless Manchester derby against United.

Jesus, a £27million signing from Palmeiras, who plundered three goals in five games before his injury, scored minutes after coming off the bench against United, but saw his effort ruled out for offside.

But Fernandinho reckons compatriot Jesus will be a huge asset in City’s final five games of the season as they look to secure a top-four spot.

“He really wanted to come back and I’m very happy for him because of the injury at the very beginning of his time here at City,” said Fernandinho.

“It kind of rocked him a bit and the rest of the players. But after two months he’s able to play so we are happy for him.”

Midfielder Yaya Toure is believes Jesus’ return can help City keep the edge over United this season – but that both will challenge for the title next season.

Pep Guardiola’s side remain a point ahead of top-four rivals United and can clinch a Champions League spot by winning their remaining games.

That would see City finish above United for the fifth time in six seasons – proof, according to Toure, of their new-found superiority over their local foes. “Yes, of course,” said Toure. “All the time we finish above them in the season, it shows City are doing very well.”

While arch-rivals Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are grubbing around for a top-four finish, Toure believes both coaches will be going for the title next term.

“United are building something very interesting, we must be aware of that.

“But City are going to be much, much stronger as well. Next year we’re going to expect more and I hope United are going to attack a little bit more.”

Toure has yet to learn if he will be offered a one-year extension after seven years at City.

“It will depend on the club,” he said. “Of course I’d like to stay, why not?”
