The Irons surrendered Dimitri Payet to Marseille in January and the French club now want to re-sign Ayew – another of their former players.
The Ghana star joined the Hammers from Swansea last August, then got injured in his first game.
He returned two months later, but despite scoring eight goals, never really rediscovered his form.
West Ham hope that will come next season. But Marseille’s owner Frank McCourt needs players to push for the French title.
