It could hit 30C today as balmy break beckons... for most of us

IF you enjoyed the hottest day of the year yesterday, get ready for things to turn up a notch today.

Hot air from Europe could push the mercury to 30C in places – and the AA warns roads will begin to melt at 27C. But typically, as hopes build for a balmy bank holiday weekend, some of us will face thundery showers. The Met Office’s Chris Page said: “We are looking at a very warm day today. We are likely to have high 20Cs everywhere, while Scotland could break 30C. It is looking like thundery showers pushing across in a north-east direction from Friday.” People hit parks and beaches yesterday and the top temperature was 28C in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. The North got the best weather with highs of 27C in Liverpool, 26C in Manchester, 24.5C in Newcastle and 25.5C in Birmingham. Down South, London clocked 25.7C and Brighton 22C. But today has some way to go to out-shine the hottest-ever May day of 32.8C, in London in 1922. On Saturday, it should be 20C to 23C in Wales and western England, and in the mid-20Cs in the east. Sun and cloud is due on Sunday, with low 20Cs expected, with more cloud on Monday.
