PM’s appeal to G7 leaders for plan to tackle online hate
THERESA May will today urge world leaders to pile pressure on social media firms, such as Google, Facebook and Twitter, to take tougher action against extremist content.
At the G7 summit in Sicily, the PM will outline plans for an “international forum” where social media firms work together to tackle online hate.
She will tell the summit the war with Islamic State “is moving from the battlefield to the internet”.
Mrs May wants firms to develop tools to remove extremist content and to pass the identities of those who post it on to the authorities.
In a veiled threat, a No10 official said: “Companies should revise conditions and industry guidelines – and those who do not do this should be held to account.”
Google last night removed the Jihadi manual, which gives bomb-making instructions, after being alerted by the Mirror that a simple search called it to the top of the results page.
The manual also tells how to plant devices in buses and at bus stops. A Google spokeswoman said: “We remove links to illegal content from our search results as soon as we’re notified of them.”
