Hollywood golden boy Matthew McConaughey was clearly prospecting for more shiny Oscar metalwork when he signed up for this knockabout adventure about a gold miner.

He fully embraces his role as Kenny Wells by sporting bad teeth, a balding pate and a very proud paunch.

But the busy film never decides if it wants to be a jolly heist caper, an indictment of Wall Street greed or a celebration of the American pioneering spirit.

Though it disappointed at the box office and was ignored for awards, there are plenty of nuggets of fun to be found.
