LITTLE FIGHTER
Mum-of-one Maria Cork was at her 20-week scan when she found out there was something wrong.
Dax, now 18 months, had multicystic dysplastic kidney, which meant his left kidney hadn’t formed properly and was covered in cysts.
Viewers watched as beautician Maria, 35, and her builder husband David, 33, feared their son would need life-saving surgery at birth.
Maria says: “Doctors didn’t know what would happen until Dax was born because although he had one functioning kidney, they couldn’t be sure it was completely healthy.
“We were terrified we might lose him but when he was born all the signs were really positive.”
And after the cameras stopped rolling in series nine, Dax proved he was a little fighter. At three weeks, he had an MRI scan which confirmed his remaining kidney was healthy enough for Dax to survive without a transplant.
“I’d never felt so relieved,” says Maria, from St Helens, Merseyside. “We could finally relax and enjoy him.”
She adds: “Dax is a whirlwind and you wouldn’t think there was anything wrong with him. After One Born, I was contacted on Facebook by other mums who had children with MCDK and it was reassuring to know we weren’t alone.
“We watched the programme back with his grandparents.
“It was really special for them to be able to see him being born.
“Being able to experience those precious few moments again when I watch it back is priceless. There’s no other feeling like it.”
