Give medics pay rise they deserve

- Edited by FIONA PARKER Valerie Crews, Beckenham, Kent

After the evil act which killed 22 innocents in Manchester, there has rightly been praise for the response of NHS staff who went into work to see if they could help, not because of money but because that is the type of people they are.

Then we have Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt going to hospitals to visit the injured and saying our medics are “absolute heroes”. But these are the very two people who have put the NHS at breaking point with nurses having to rely on food banks to feed their families.

So, Mrs May, if you do value our NHS workers as you say, why not fund the service adequately and give staff the pay rise they deserve?

Pete Wilson, Durham

The Manchester terrorist attack has highlighted the wonderful work of our NHS staff and the emergency services. We have heard stories about how medics worked through the night to save lives. Many will have been traumatised by what they saw, but they set aside their own emotions to do their job. These are the very people that this callous Tory Government has treated appallingly by offering them a miserly 1% pay rise, while subjecting the NHS to cut after cut. I hope people remember this when it comes to voting in the forthcoming election. S Roberts, Carlisle, Cumbria In the wake of the Manchester bomb atrocity, Jeremy Hunt told NHS staff in the city that he was proud of what they had done. This is the same Jeremy Hunt who has given NHS nurses a pitiful 1% pay rise this year and who called junior doctors “greedy” last year when they took action against his unfair contract.

Jeremy Hunt declares himself “proud” of an NHS he is busy selling off. The hypocrisy of the Tories is beyond belief.

Sasha Simic, North London

I heard a nurse on the radio telling the story of a surgeon whose daughter was at the concert and had witnessed the aftermath of the bombing. He then went into work and operated on the victims without mentioning anything until near the end of his shift. This is the incredible professionalism our NHS relies upon.

So, Mrs May and Mr Hunt, give these wonderful people the wage increase they deserve and stop destroying our NHS.

Harriet Jones, Cardiff

After the horrors of Manchester, and without political point scoring, how can any party not agree that our emergency services deserve more than a paltry 1% cent rise?

Peter Rochford, South Shields, Tyne & Wear

May we say a big thank you to all the emergency services workers, surgeons and nurses who worked tirelessly to save life and limb after the Manchester atrocity. These are the very people this Tory Government has treated abominably.

Dorothy Baston, Stockport, Gtr Manchester

In view of the sterling work of medical staff in Manchester and NHS staff generally throughout the year, surely, it is time to lift the 1% cap on their pay?
