ON THIS DAY 50 YEARS AGO (1967)

Our front page celebrated the homecoming of Francis Chichester who, at 65, became the first man to sail singlehand­edly around the world. We told how “the old man of the sea”, in Gypsy Moth IV, was greeted by cheering crowds and an “armada of small boats” on entering Plymouth harbour.

64 YEARS AGO (1953)

New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first to conquer Mount Everest after a gruelling climb up the southern face. They could only stay on the summit for 15 minutes because they were low on oxygen.

49 YEARS AGO (1968)

Manchester United became the first English club to win the European Cup, beating Benfica 4-1 at Wembley, with three goals in extra time. Winger George Best played a starring role and was later crowned European Player of the Year.
