Sean Bean and Anna Friel star in this gritty thriller, starting tonight after being postponed due to the Manchester terror attack last week.

Set in northern England and written by Jimmy McGovern, who gave us Cracker, our hero is Sean Bean as we’ve never seen him before.

Usually swatting off villains as an action man, here he is a softly-spoken Catholic priest Father Michael Kerrigan. Although, if the flashbacks are anything to go by, he’s got a few skeletons in his closet.

Meanwhile, Anna Friel is tormented single mum Christina Fitzimmons, who loses her job at a betting shop after borrowing money from the till and punching her boss in the face. That’ll do it.

But it’s the start of a descent into chaos for Christina, who is left struggling to feed her three kids or find a place to stay. And that’s before further tragedy strikes.

The lives of Christina and Michael cross paths in the run-up to her daughter’s first communion.

But can the kindly priest help a woman on the brink of disaster?
