WAG TO RICHES
German boss leads Huddersfield to dramatic £170m fortune and says: These players are legends
DAVID WAGNER hailed his Huddersfield players as “legends” after they won a £170million shoot-out to reach the Premier League.
Terriers were tipped for relegation at the start of the season and their delighted boss said: “I said to them before the final, ‘You have the opportunity to become legends’. Now they are legends for sure. Everybody
will remember this group of players and what they have done on our small budget.”
Wagner claims his players have written their names alongside club greats Herbert Chapman, Bill Shankly and Denis Law by ending unfancied Huddersfield’s 45-year exile from the top flight.
“This football club has written an unbelievable story, a fairytale,” he said. “Even when I speak about it, I can’t believe it.” Chris Schindler scored the winning penalty after Danny Ward had saved from Jordan Obita, and Wagner said he was shocked to see his fellow German step up.
“When Schindy said he would take the fifth penalty, I was surprised. But he was totally confident – and scored.”
It left chairman and owner Dean Hoyle (above) in tears of joy.
“I am so emotional,” he said. “I have been supporting this club since 1969, so to be a Premier League team now shows dreams do come true. We’re on the big stage, and we have got there the right way.”
