THE Bank of England uses children’s books such as The Cat In The Hat to make its reports readable.

Economists adopted author Dr Seuss’s style and simple words to explain jargon after a study showed only 20% of Brits understood its material.

So executives studied the flowing prose used in Dr Seuss classics such as Green Eggs And Ham.

Dame Nemat Shafik, ex-Bank of England deputy governor, revealed the secret at the literary Hay Festival in Powys, Wales.

She added: “Our typical publications were accessible to only one in five. It’s not about dumbing down – people who really know their stuff can explain things in simple and accessible language.”
