WOOD’S THE GO-TO GUY

- BY DEAN WILSON

AFTER months spent in gyms and treatment rooms, Mark Wood is relishing his return to the limelight.

Wood wants to be England’s go-to man at the death in the Champions Trophy. He put his hand up for the job with a nervejangling final over in Southampton, where he defended seven runs to win the game and secure the series against South Africa. The 27-year-old reckons all the hours spent getting his ankle right were worth it for the ‘best feeling in the world’. “I want to be the main man winning games for England,” said Wood (right). “It was great to get us over the line on Saturday and I hope to do it again. “It is the best feeling, winning games for England. At the death you feel like you can get wickets and it is something I enjoy... when I get it right!”

England are developing a strong stable of bowlers, with Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes also able to do the job.

And Stokes (left) will be wielding a high-tech bat at the Champions Trophy.

He, Alex Hales and Jason Roy will have microchips attached to their bats to reveal the speed with which they connect with the ball.
