We’ll stop Stampede

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

READING chairman John Madejski is confident the club can hold on to Jaap Stam after he came within a penalty kick of taking them to the Premier League.

Stam has a year left on the Royals deal he signed last summer. But the former Manchester United star has postponed talks on new terms until now, and he is in demand.

Madejski said: “I think he will be here, he has got a job to do. I hope he will be here. Every manager that is successful is always under the spotlight, but I hope he will stay.

“He is very happily ensconced in Berkshire, so it will have to be a pretty big, tempting offer by my estimation to take him away from Reading.”
