His ‘covfefe’ tweet stirs up kerfuffle on internet
WHILE possibly suffering jet lag after his first trip abroad as US President, Donald Trump was poised for a Twitter rant.
But his plan was scuppered when he posted gobbledegook at 12.06am yesterday, writing: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe”.
Tens of thousands of people were quick to mock Trump, who once boasted: “I know words, I have the best words.”
The tweet remained on his account for more than five hours before being deleted.
Trying to make light of the gaffe, he tweeted: “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’??? Enjoy!”
He could have been trying to spell “conference” or “coverage” after Sean Spicer, his press secretary, stormed out of a briefing on Tuesday over questions about Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. He is alleged to have held talks with Russia last year on the possibility of opening a secret communication channel.
The response on social media included a mocked-up Queen with the caption: “What the hell is #covfefe”.
The recurring meme of a laughing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama returned. Others ridiculed Trump’s “Make America Great Again” caps.
Rob Szczerba posted: “I’m guessing that it’s either your Twitter password or nuclear launch code.”
Even dictionary MerriamWebster’s account took a swipe at 1.08am: “Wakes up. Checks Twitter ... Uh ... Looksups fo ... Regrets checking Twitter. Goes back to bed.”
