Waitrose has revealed a 70% surge in sales of Italian apéritif Aperol. Last week’s sunny weather fuelled a boom in demand for the drink, which has been Manchester United’s official global spirits partner since 2014. Bitter orange-based Aperol – mixed with Prosecco and soda to form a spritz – dates back to 1919 and has become an Italian institution. Soaring temperatures also triggered a 54% jump in rosé wine sales last week, the supermarket firm, part of the John Lewis Partnership, revealed.
