JUAN CALMS BAWL BOY

-

MARTIN DEL POTRO comforted tearful Nicolas Almagro after a knee injury forced the Spaniard to retire.

Almagro pulled out of their second-round match with the score 6-3 3-6 1-1 – and wept as he lay on the baseline.

Andy Murray’s next opponent, who has suffered serious injuries in his career, crossed the net to console Almagro – then put his arm around him as he returned to his chair.

The 2009 US Open champion even packed Almagro’s bag before he left the court to earn a standing ovation from the crowd. “I tried to find good words for that moment,” said the Argentine. “I said to him to try to be calm. To try to think about his family, his baby. “And sometimes the heart is first ahead of the tennis match or the tennis life. I think he has everything to fix this problem and come back on tour stronger. “It’s not easy for me when you have a friend on the other side of the court showing an injury or crying. It was really a bad moment for both, but I wish all the best to him.”
