Manchester’s response to an act of hatred has been incredible.

Its people have retaliated with the most powerful weapon we have, love.

A young Muslim man stood amid the griefstricken and asked people to trust him. They did so with their embraces.

On the night of the Europa Cup, we all stood United. Even me, a lifelong Liverpool fan cheered Jose’s boys as they played their heart out for the city they represent.

We can all be proud too of the Unite and other union members among the first responders to tend the injured.

When danger compels us to flee, our nurses, doctors, police and paramedics run towards it. They put our lives above theirs.

They are the best of us.
