What’s the difference?
COGNITIVE AND DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOUR THERAPY
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy) is a type of verbal treatment that focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviour. It teaches you coping skills for dealing with different problems. It combines cognitive therapy (examining the things you think) and behaviour therapy (examining the things you do).
DBT (Dialectical Behaviour
Therapy) derives from the word dialectic meaning getting at the truth or finding a solution. DBT is also a type of talking treatment based on CBT, but has been adapted to help people who experience emotions very intensely. It’s mainly used to treat problems linked to borderline personality disorder and is the gold standard treatment for people with suicidal tendencies.
