Nobody can doubt that the Premier League has brought previously unknown wealth and spending power to clubs in the top flight of the English game. Yet, to critics, it will always be branded “the greed is good league”. Transfer fees and wages have rocketed. So too has global interest in English football, with broadcasters around the world queueing up to buy TV rights. And the launch of the breakaway league was funded by the biggest TV deal in the history of British sport. BSkyB and the BBC signed a fiveyear deal worth £305million.
