TPIMs must be strengthened and used more
THERESA May, when Home Secretary, removed control orders. In my view, this was a mistake. We now have TPIMs, which are not as effective.
They should be reinforced to add longer curfews and more control over people’s access to the internet – one mobile phone and one laptop is enough for anyone under an order.
We already have the ability to relocate people of concern and that should be used more frequently.
I would like to see 20 to 50 TPIMs in use. That could heavily disrupt radicalisation.
We need to look again at the terrorism hotline, to make sure suspicions are being listened to and particularly make sure women are able to speak in their own language.
Social-media companies have economies the size of small countries and have the technical know-how to root out extremist messages. They need to do more or we will have to legislate to make them do so.
