HOT COLE IS THE TALK OF THE TOON

-

TOWARDS the end of the previous season, Kevin Keegan began planning for Newcastle’s top-flight future by spending a club-record £1.75million on Bristol City striker Andy Cole.

Cole (above) had been rejected by Arsenal as a youngster, yet he made a massive impact on Tyneside. He was handed the Toon’s iconic No.9 shirt and lived up to the legend of Jackie Milburn and Malcolm Macdonald by scoring a record 41 goals for Newcastle in his first full season – 34 of them coming in the league.

SIR MATT BUSBY, one of the managerial greats, died on January 20, 1994, at the age of 84.

Busby had been with Manchester United since taking over as manager in 1945. He remained as a director after retiring in 1969. He was a visionary who supported the campaign for English clubs to compete in Europe. And he also built a youth development scheme known as the Busby Babes which produced some of the greatest names in football such as Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton and George Best.
