One of the things the BBC does so well is showing us the unique ways some people live, which ordinarily we might never know about. And one such community can be found in a remote spot in Antarctica, right at the bottom of the world.

They are the small and slightly strange group of people who work at Britain’s state of the art Antarctic research base, known as Halley VI. Many days’ travel away from anything even approaching civilisation, they live and work together in several small metal buildings in some of the most extreme conditions on the planet.

But now Halley is in trouble, thanks to a huge and constantly expanding crevasse in the ice shelf just 6km away. So they all have to up sticks and move, which is easier said than done, given that it means transporting 981-tonnes across 23km of dangerous ice plains.

And they need to do it before the 130mph winds and constant darkness of the Antarctic winter sets in. But if anyone can do it, this lot can.
