BATTLE OF THE BIRTHDAY GIRLS

- FROM NEIL McLEMAN

JELENA OSTAPENKO and Timea Bacsinszky will meet in the French Open semi-final tomorrow when they both celebrate birthdays.

Estonian world No.47 Ostapenko shocked Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 6-2 6-2 to reach the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time. And Swiss world No.31 Bacsinszky ended the hopes of home favourite Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-4.

Ostapenko (right), who will turn 20 tomorrow, said: “It is great to play here when it is my birthday, I hope I can enjoy it.”

Play was stopped for three hours by heavy rain in the afternoon but Ostapenko lost only one game after the break. Bacsinszky, 28 tomorrow, reached the semis here in 2015 and has returned to the last four for the loss of only one set.

She joked: “We had all the seasons in one day today – there was a storm, sunshine and I think even snow!

“It was very tough and to keep concentration was very difficult. I am exhausted.”
