England strikers coached by the Auld Enemy
ENGLAND’S strikers are being given shooting tips to beat Scotland – by a Scotsman.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate is using a specialist striker coach to get his forwards on target for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier with the Auld Enemy at Hampden Park.
Glasgow-born Allan Russell,
36, put Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jamie Vardy through their paces at St George’s Park.
Former Rangers trainee Russell, who played for Airdrie, Patrick Thistle and Kilmarnock, has his own company, Superior Striker, and is working with Southgate on a consultancy basis.
Russell has also worked with the under-21s in the past as well as Stoke striker Saido Berahino, Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, Benik Afobe of Bournemouth and Burnley’s Andre Gray.
Russell told Mirror Sport last year he was surprised strikers do not receive more individual coaching.
He said: “They are match-winners and need to be trained a certain way so they can consistently be match-winners.
“In my career, I felt there was never enough detail on how strikers should be trained and coached.”
