Attack with hammer at Notre-Dame
A HAMMER-wielding man reportedly shouted, “This is for Syria”, before he attacked police officers at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris yesterday.
The suspect injured one before being shot and wounded outside.
Terrified tourists were trapped inside the cathedral as armed police sealed off the building and security forces secured the area.
Karine Dalle, a spokeswoman for the Paris diocese, said on
SHOT Attacker on the ground French TV that 900 people were stuck inside the cathedral.
The assailant, who is thought to have acted alone, was taken to hospital, where he was treated.
One tourist inside the cathedral posted on Twitter: “Trapped in Notre-Dame after police shoot a man. We are with our 2 terrified children.”
French interior minister Gerard Collomb said that the attacker was carrying the identification card of an Algerian student.
