Our front page reported that we’d voted by two-to-one to stay in the Common Market. Labour PM Harold Wilson, who led the pro-market campaign, claimed victory saying 14 years of national argument were now over. The referendum results were 17,378,581 in favour and 8,470,073 against.

17 YEARS AGO (2000)

Tony Blair was given a slow handclap by members of the Womens’ Institute at their annual conference, forcing the PM to cut a section of his speech about the NHS. Some walked out, complainin­g his speech was too long and too political.

78 YEARS AGO (1939)

George VI and Elizabeth became the first king and queen to visit the United States. They travelled to Washington and New York and were invited to dinner with President Franklin D Roosevelt, who served them hot dogs and smoked turkey.
