In this scenario the Labour leader would be free to implement his ambitious agenda of nationalisation, additional investment and anti-austerity measures. The markets would be stunned but could be reassured by the prospect of a softer Brexit. The EU has already signalled it could delay Brexit talks to accommodate the change in governing party. For the Conservatives it would be a disaster that would plunge the party into a bitter and potentially divisive leadership contest.
