AND today’s lesson is – where can you get a school uniform for a fiver?

The answer is Aldi. The budget shop is selling classroom wear for half the price of rival Tesco and a third of those being sold by Sainsbury’s and M&S.

Parents can snap up a twin pack of polo shirts for £1.65, skirt or trousers for £1.95 and a jumper for £1.40.

Schools have not even broken up for the summer, but Aldi is getting in early – with a move that is likely to spark a school uniform price war.

Corporate buying managing director Tony Baines said: “It is no secret sending the kids back to school can be financially demanding, which is why we’re doing everything we can to offer parents the best quality products at the lowest possible price.

“We know mums prefer to get their school shopping finished early, so by launching our Back to School range earlier than before, we’ve been able to lock in low price points and guarantee the best possible deal.” A school uniform at Tesco costs £9.50 for a boy and £9 for a girl while Asda’s are going for £7.50 for either. M&S has slashed its schoolwear by 20% but parents still pay £16 to kit out a boy and £15.20 a girl. Sainsbury’s was the most expensive at £16.50 and £15.50.
