Marshall is a match for his dad

- Leigh v Wigan 8pm BY GARETH WALKER

LIAM MARSHALL only expected to play the odd game for Wigan this year – instead he has already surpassed the try tally of his fellow winger dad David.

Marshall senior was a member of the legendary Wigan squad of the late 1980s and early 90s, touching down 11 times in 39 appearances.

But such has been Liam’s rise this year, he has already passed that total with 18 tries in 16 starts.

Ahead of tonight’s short trip to Leigh, Liam said: “I didn’t expect to play anywhere near the number of games I have – I thought I’d maybe make my debut this season.

“I only ever saw my dad play once, in a charity game. But I’ve seen some old video footage of him.

“Our coach Shaun Wane used to play with dad and says he was tough, whereas I’d say I’m more skilful.

“There’s a discussion about who would be fastest – my grandma’s the only one who could decide and she stays impartial!”
