COLLYMORE: IT SEEMED LIKE MY HEAD WAS EXPLODING

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

STAN COLLYMORE believes his late winner capped the best game the Premier League has staged.

Collymore, who slammed the stoppage-time goal (left) that killed Newcastle’s title hopes that memorable April night on Merseyside, said: “Wherever I go, people still want to talk to me about that game. I’ve

been out in Russia and that’s all the Liverpool fans I met wanted to talk about.

“It was the same in Sydney, Thailand, America…

“The reason it’s the best game in the Premier League is because it was the best of what the Premier League is about — attacking football, a big stadium, and a night game.” Even more memorable than the match, though, was the reaction of Toon boss Kevin Keegan to Collymore’s winner, slumping in despair over the advertising boards.

“I didn’t see Keegan’s reaction until a couple of days later when it was replayed,” said Collymore.

“All I remember is that when I scored the last one my head exploded. It was one of those moments you knew was pretty special and that it would be replayed over and over.

“I have to say that game wouldn’t have been what it was without Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, David Ginola, Faustino Asprilla and Les Ferdinand – the very best of what the Premier League had to offer in terms of attacking talent.”
