‘U21S HAVE SEEN LAST OF MARCUS’

- BY JAMES NURSEY

AIDY BOOTHROYD doesn’t expect to ever see Marcus Rashford back in the England U21s again.

But the young Lions’ boss (above) insists it is down to Gareth Southgate’s decision as senior manager and not Jose Mourinho.

Rashford could play for the U21s in the European Championship in Poland this month, but will not be called up after 11 goals for United.

United chief Mourinho has always been against the idea, but Boothroyd insists Rashford’s omission is because he is now an established full international, such as fellow youngsters Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli.

Boothroyd said: “In the end, it never came down to Jose, it was about me talking to Gareth and listening to what he had to say.

“And, for the best for everybody, Marcus went with the senior team.

“I think once you’ve moved, you’ve moved, like Sterling or Alli – Marcus is in that bracket.

“And he has become Manchester United’s No.1 goalscorer.”
