Forced exit of Hillsboro cop was unlawful
DAVID Crompton was forced to quit as Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police unlawfully, the High Court has ruled.
Mr Crompton was suspended and then made to resign by Dr Alan Billings, the region’s police and crime commissioner.
The row was over a statement after the Hillsborough inquest findings last year, in which Mr Crompton was accused of smearing Liverpool fans.
The Judicial Office rejected the claim. Mr Crompton said yesterday: “The judgment concludes Dr Billings acted unlawfully from start to finish.”
Dr Billings said he was “seeking permission to appeal the outcome”.
It has emerged taxpayers will cough up at least £250,000 for the case.
