U20S LACK PREM EXPERIENCE
ENGLAND’S World Cup heroes played a total of 1,094 Premier League minutes between them last season, equivalent to about 12 full matches.
Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook – England captain – made the single biggest contribution to that total of the 13 players who featured in the final.
He played 431 minutes for the Cherries, with matchwinner Dominic CalvertLewin second on the list with 346 minutes for Everton.
Toffees team-mate Ademola Lookman appeared for 287 minutes, with Josh Onomah (17), Jonjoe Kenny (12) and Ainsley MaitlandNiles (one) making up the rest of the total.
It will be interesting to see how many members of the squad gain additional Premier League playing time in the 2017-18 season.
Keeper Freddie Woodman racked up the most minutes of any player, with 1,260 – all on loan at Scottish side Kilmarnock. He will now hope for more chances with parent-club Newcastle.
Home-grown debutants averaged 716 minutes of Premier League football in 2016-17, a 20 per cent increase on 2015-16 (596 minutes).
Everton, including Kenny, Calvert-Lewin and Kieran Dowell, won the inaugural PL2 competition for Under-23 players. Tom Davies played 12 times for the Toffees’ PL2 side before starring in the first team.
