Let’s forgive and strengthen our squad

-

Cooper, Chuka Umunna and Angela Eagle have signalled they would now be ready to serve in Mr Corbyn’s frontbench team.

There is speculation too about the return of senior figures such as former leader Ed Miliband, war hero Dan Jarvis and ex-minister Caroline Flint.

But Mr Corbyn’s inner circle are divided over how far to offer an olive branch to their former critics or punish them for failing to show loyalty in the past.

One source said: “The question for me is how far we can trust them. If we give them a job, will they play nice?”

One idea is offering senior backbenchers roles in developing new policies rather than giving them top jobs. This would allow them to be part of the project without forcing out existing Shadow Cabinet members who showed loyalty.

Meanwhile Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott is ill and Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffith could be axed after being deemed disloyal in the campaign. COMEBACK TIP Caroline Flint
