Corrie ‘overkill’
Ex-Corrie writer and Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies says soaps are in danger of dying because they have too many episodes a week.
As Corrie goes six days a week later this year, he says: “All the soaps are wearing thin. Cut them to three nights a week or otherwise they are going to die.”
Russell tells gay website Guys Like U that viewers are no longer excited by storylines, which have become repetitive.
He says: “When you get someone discovering their sister is their mother and then is their sister again, we now say ‘Oh, that again’. When did you last see a story when you said, ‘Wow, I haven’t seen that before’? You have to get extreme, like Bethany’s grooming, which is a brilliant story but hard to watch.”
