BBC1, 9pm Teenager Vernon Oyenusi was callously blinded with tear gas then shot dead by police at the end of the last episode. And now those events are causing a few sleepless nights.

Father Michael (Sean Bean) must process his own guilt, and seeing Helen’s (Muna Otaru) dignity in the face of grief, he turns to Father Peter (Adrian Dunbar) for advice.

Meanwhile, PC Andrew Powell (Mark Stanley) is pressured by an extremely jittery PC Dawn Morris (Aisling Loftus) to back up her account. She says the action was taken in defence – but they all know that’s not true.

In confession with Father Michael, the priest encourages Andrew to tell the truth. But Dawn piles a few threats onto the peer pressure, yelling at Andrew’s wife: “If he doesn’t watch my back, then why should I watch his? Why should anyone?”

Should Andrew come clean to his superiors and risk being left out of the coffee round for good?

And as the flashbacks start to build up for Father Michael, we begin to understand more about his frankly horrible childhood.
