Ranieri was big Hassel for Jimmy

SIGNING Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink saw Chelsea match the British record fee of £15million.

That was the price Newcastle had paid Blackburn Rovers for striker Alan Shearer.

Hasselbaink (above) was recruited from Atletico Madrid and in his first season at Stamford Bridge became a firm fans’ favourite with 23 goals in 35 games. But within three months of his arrival Chelsea sacked Gianluca Vialli and replaced him with Claudio Ranieri – Hasselbaink’s boss at Atletico.

Some suggested that would suit would the Holland international, but he later revealed he was “dismayed” by Vialli’s departure and hated Ranieri’s training methods.
