Doctor’s £50k mercy mission to help victims of acid attacks

- BY STEPHEN WHITE

A BRITISH surgeon is spending £50,000 of his own money to help rebuild the scarred faces of women who suffer horrific acid attacks in Pakistan.

Dr Asim Shahmalak, 56, is assisting six victims, including a mum who had acid thrown at her by a man after turning down his marriage proposal.

The former NHS surgeon, who runs the Crown Clinic in Manchester, said: “I wept when I heard the stories. People were treated better in the Middle Ages. The victims had given up hope of ever getting help because the government in Pakistan cannot afford to do anything. “They are not accepted by society because of disfigurement and left to beg on the streets.” Karachi-born Dr Shahmalak will also train local medics so they can carry on his work after he has returned to Britain.
