Mike’s three million miles at the wheel

- BY NICOLA BARTLETT

BRITAIN’S most travelled coach driver has racked up three million miles and 40 years behind the wheel.

Veteran Mike Davies, 68, has driven National Express’s longest direct service – 580 miles from Edinburgh to Plymouth – for the past eight years.

He started in transport as a bus conductor in 1970.

The grandad-of-five from Kirkcaldy, Fife, said: “National Express is a British institution and it’s impossible to travel any distance on motorways without spotting one.

“Coaches have really changed – scratchy velvet seats went out years ago – it’s all leather now and technology has been a real game changer.”

National Express turns 45 this year and its coaches have done 3.5 billion miles.
