Italian official Davide Massa red-carded defender Raphael Varane, who brought down Dele Alli in the box, with England trailing 2-1.

Massa had no hesitation in pointing to the spot – but he hesitated in dismissing French star Varane until the VAR system indicated the Real Madrid star had deliberate­ly brought down the Spurs playmaker. Kane – who had given the Three Lions a ninth-minute 1-0 lead with a closerange finish – stepped up to beat Spurs team-mate Hugo Lloris from the spot as England levelled at 2-2.

But Gareth Southgate’s (left) hopes of closing his first season in charge with a draw against Les Bleus were ended when Borussia Dortmund attacker Dembele fired in the winner.
