An aspirin a day ‘can kill some OAPs’
A DAILY aspirin to stop blood clots can be fatal for over-75s who have had heart attacks or strokes.
A survey showed older aspirin users were 10 times more likely to get dangerous internal bleeds than younger patients.
Bleeds requiring hospital admission rose from 1.5% per year for under-65s to 3.5% for over-75s.
Prof Peter Rothwell, of Oxford University, said: “Our findings raise questions about the risk and benefit of long-term daily aspirin use in people aged 75 and over.”
The study backed using proton-pump inhibitors to reduce stomach acid in older patients on aspirin.
