Peace put in danger

-

PEACE in Northern Ireland is far more valuable than any deal between the Tories and Democratic Unionists to keep Theresa May in Downing Street.

So when former PM John Major warns about a Westminster pact threatening the fragile unity in Northern Ireland, we should all listen.

He laid the groundwork for the historic Good Friday Agreement, which ended 30 years of The Troubles that claimed 3,600 lives.

Mrs May is smarting from her spectacular failed election gamble but should heed Mr Major’s warning instead of selfishly pursuing her own political safety.

Peace in Northern Ireland is delicate with the Stormont Assembly suspended.

Now is not the time for our Prime Minister to abandon her role as an honest broker by jumping into bed with Democratic Unionists.

For Mrs May to take peace for granted is fresh evidence that she is unsuitable to hold high office.
