I thought I’d won a pint of milk.. turns out it was £1m

Pensioner’s surprise at Lotto prize

- BY STEPHEN WHITE

A PENSIONER who scooped £1million on a lottery scratchcard thought he had won a pint of milk.

Bill Bett, 69, misinterpreted the “1MIL” prize he saw on the card and was stunned when staff at his local Co-op store told him he was a millionaire.

Former art teacher Bill said: “I always used to say no one wins £1million on a scratchcard. When I saw the amount it didn’t really click at first. On the card it reads 1MIL and I thought, ‘What does this mean, I’ve won a pint of milk?’”

Bill, of Markinch in Fife, bought the Monopoly Millionaire 2017 card on his local high street and sat on a wall outside to scratch it off.

He said “I went back into the shop and asked them to check it. They confirmed that I had won and that I’d have to call the Lottery line. I couldn’t believe it, but I actually remained quite calm.

“When I got home I phoned my three sisters, who all thought I was winding them up. But they said it couldn’t have happened to a better brother and are so happy for me.”

The pensioner added: “I tucked the scratchcard carefully behind the cover of my tablet for safekeeping. I was still double-checking it right up until it was validated a week later.”

Bill, who has health problems which mean he struggles to climb the stairs in his current home, has bought a bungalow following his win on June 1. And he plans to use the extra space to start painting again.

He added: “It will make a huge difference having everything on one level. I will have a conservatory and a garage for storage, CAT GOT THE CREAM Milk pint which means I will have space to take up painting again. I used to teach art to children with learning difficulties but I haven’t painted for years.” Bill is also planning to go on holiday. He said: “We’ve talked about taking a ferry trip to Brussels or France and maybe getting a caravan. And of course, I’ll be looking after my three sisters.” The Monopoly Millionaire 2017 cards cost £5, with prizes ranging from £5 up to £1million.

LET us share the joy of scratchcard pensioner Bill Bett who thought he had won a pint of milk, but scooped £1million. Bill’s in the land of milk and money.
