May’s not fit to lead Brexit talks

-

Theresa May is not capable of leading this country through the minefield of the Brexit negotiations. Only with a new Prime Minister steering the ship will European leaders see we are a country which takes its future seriously and that we will fight hard for a fair exit.

Theresa May has shown herself to be a weak and incompetent leader. If she really has the country’s best interests at heart, and not just her own, she should resign. Mary Pester, Saltash, Cornwall We’ve had ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ Brexit, and now there is Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson’s ‘open’ Brexit? With 27 EU members who have to be persuaded, why not be flexible and go for a ‘fuzzy’ Brexit!

This would mean positioning our policy as a ‘huggy’ Brexit for those nations who admire us, a ‘frigid’ Brexit for the 17-plus countries who despise us and an ‘offhand’ Brexit for those few remaining nations who are either indifferent or who, like me, fail to fully understand the subtle nuances between the extremities of ‘soft’, ‘hard’ and ‘open’! Paul Methven, Winscombe, North Somerset David Cameron made a massive mistake in letting the public vote on coming out of Europe, which was a political decision to appease the right-wing of his own party. Theresa May made a terrible error calling a snap general election and has put herself and the country further in a mess. These are two unnecessary decisions by the Tories which have caused chaos in this country. J M Morris, Cwmaman, Aberdare How can anybody now believe in Theresa May’s judgment in negotiating a satisfactory deal for the UK in the Brexit negotiations following her disastrous decision to call a general election? She has proved herself to be self-centred egotist and will be a liability to Britain obtaining a good deal with the Europeans. R Tandy, Liverpool Theresa May called the election so she would gain a clear mandate to push on with Brexit and enact the “will of the British people”. The result of the election makes it very dubious whether pushing on with Brexit is still the “will of the British people”.

Many people are having doubts about the wisdom of this. Surely, the sensible move is to have another vote. Gerry Cookson, Woodbridge, Suffolk Weakened, broken and humiliated – such is the effigy of Mrs May, now insisting on securing a Brexit and leading Britain forward on “her terms” for a “secure and stable” future. Will, someone please show this deluded and extremely spiteful woman the door? Susan Anne Noble, Basingstoke, Hants How can we have tariff-free access to the European market, Mr Corbyn, without freedom of movement? Labour needs to remember that the majority voted to leave EU control. Support for Labour could evaporate overnight if Jeremy Corbyn is made to look less straightforward than his present, popular image. John Shale, Wigan
