City honours Ariana over One Love gig

- BY STEPHEN WHITE s.white@mirror.co.uk

ARIANA Grande is to become an honorary citizen of Manchester.

The award recognises her role in organising the fundraising concert for victims of the terror attack that hit her gig in the city.

A suicide bomber killed 22 people, including seven children, as they left Manchester Arena on May 22.

The American singer, 23, was joined by top acts Coldplay, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry for the One Love charity concert at Old Trafford cricket ground on June 4.

It attracted the biggest TV audience of the year so far, with 14.5million viewers.

Manchester council leader Sir Richard Leese said: “This seems a fitting moment to update the way we recognise those who make noteworthy contributions to our city’s life and success. “We’ve all had cause to be incredibly proud of Manchester and the resilient and compassionate way in which the city, and all those associated with it, responded to the terrible events of that night – with love and courage rather than hatred and fear.” The 22 gig-goers died when Islamist terrorist Salman Abedi, 22, set off a rucksack bomb in the arena foyer. The funeral of “wonderful mum” Wendy Fawell, 50, who was killed in the attack, was held at Rawdon Crematorium, West Yorks, yesterday.
